Viewfinder: Scenes from Mt. Horeb's International Day

Thursday's event offered peeks into other cultures.

Mt. Horeb School converted 17 classrooms into little embassies for 15 countries for Wednesday's International Day. Helping to share, highlight—and explain—cultures from Colombia to China and a little spot known as the "US of A" were several dozen volunteer ambassadors, mostly parents and family members of the students.

The event was organized by the Mt. Horeb PTO, with Deneen Gatto, Lori Weiss and Nancy Phillips serving as co-chairwomen of the organizing committee. They recruited "ambassadors" Cecilia Fontana, Susan Delaney and Mandy Osifchin (for Ireland); Maghna Vaidya, Mita Patel and Deepti Gupta (for India); Gia Lucas and Maryanne Dubois (for Italy); Lora Sedlak and Nicole Kolb (Ukraine and Slovakia); Sharon O'Brien (Belgium); Carla Vinhas (Brazil); Annie Hui Zhu and Marjorie Lee (China); Celeste Campos and Linda Draper (Colombia); Wendy and Mark Renda (US); Suzanne Velazquez (Mexico); Myo-wook Chang Ki (Korea); Colleen Abbot (United Kingdom); and Danielle Lader, Melissa Hughes and Jodi Scheiner (Israel).

The students were also treated to musical entertainment by Werner Goebel, who performed traditional German music, and an end-of-the-day performance by the a capella quartet "Ball in the House," who performed doo-wop and Motown tunes.
