Township Smoking Ban Introduced

Ordinance would add ban to existing county, state bans.

The unanimously introduced an ordinance barring smoking on municipal property at the May 24 meeting.

If passed following a public hearing in June, smoking would be prohibited on municipal buiidings, grounds, parks and playgrounds. During the meeting, committee members noted smoking is already banned on the county-owned East County Preserve.

The township will post signs noting the ban on properties—which may be obtained from the Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey coalition. Coalition representative Donna Drummond presented a sign the group offers to the committee during the meeting.

"The trend is very much toward smoke free right now," she said. "We need to protect our community members—especially children, who are out there playing sports, and our elderly."
