Red-Light Cameras Get Pushback By Township

Warren officials go on the record opposing use of cameras to catch red light violators.

Warren's already told a company looking to install traffic cameras in town to ticket people running red lights to hit the road, but last week, members went a step further.

At the June 16 meeting, committee members unanimously approved a resolution endorsing an effort by State Sen. Michael Doherty, R-Washington, to repeal the state's law estabiishing a pilot program on the traffic control monitoring systems. Sen. Doherty's bill, S1952, was introduced May 17 and has been referred to the Senate's Transportation Committee.

The committee's resolution notes the township "believes that the use of red light cameras can be dangerous and unreiiabie, and that such cameras are not effective toois in furthering traffic safety." It also says the cameras don't give drivers "an ample opportunity" to defend themselves if caught by one of the cameras.
