The county's proposed police consolidation in eastern Somerset County died with the unanimous vote of the Warren Township Committee to decline participation, the fourth of the four towns in a planned precinct to do so.

"I was one of the participants in this, and I do commend the county for taking a look at the situation," Deputy Mayor Vic Sodillo said. "But for Warren, we did not find this beneficial. We wouldn't have the coverage; we wouldn't have the staffing levels."

Other committee members echoed his comments, simultaneously praising local police while noting the plans short comings.

"I think it would be fiscally damaging down the road," Committeeman George Lazo said.

Mayor Carolann Garafola said she had a "real problem" with part of the plan which would fire public employees, only to replace them with police officers.

Watchung pulled out of the plan first, voting July 20 to withdraw from the plan, followed by North Plainfield on July 23, and the Green Brook Township Committee July 30.
