Team tops Ridge and North Hunterdon

Submitted by Eric Binder

The Watchung Hills Regional boys track team improved its record to 4-4 after a first place finish in their second home meet of the season, as they hosted North Hunterdon and Ridge.

The afternoon was packed with personal records—39 to be exact—and even a freshman record. To make a long list short, here are some of the highlights.

Lu Goncalves, junior, was golden in the hurdles. In the 400m hurdles, Goncalves beat both teams with a 58.5s. Then, in the 110m hurdles, he posted a 16.3s and placed first. Aaron Jaslove placed second in the 400m hurdles with a 61.2s.

The distance and sprinting studs shone again, lead by Mike Ceaser, Maxwell Brown and Brad Mluzan. Ceaser placed first overall in the 400m with a time of 51.4s and Mluzan placed first against North Hunterdon with a 11.5s in the 100m. Brown smashed his personal record in the 1600m again, placing first against Ridge with a 4:31.9s. These three runners have been phenomenal for the Warriors throughout the entire season, and the team rode their backs on Tuesday.

As for the jumpers, Brian Green and Andrew Hunter were nothing but perfect. Green, in the high jump, placed first against both schools with a 40 feet 9 inches. In the pole vault, Hunter soared over 14 feet to tie his personal record and beat the competition. A congratulations goes out to Ray Diorio for tying Hunter’s freshman pole vault record at 10 feet.

Dan Caffrey, senior thrower, was absolutely spectacular in the javelin and discus. He placed first overall in the javelin with a 171 feet.

Then, at discus, a champion was de-throned. Tommie Loeffler threw a personal best, 126 feet 10 inches. However, when Caffrey stepped into the circle, he threw a 126 feet 11 inches, smashing his personal record by around 20 feet and beating the seemingly invincible Loeffler by a mere inch. He placed first against Ridge.

Tuesday was a day to remember for the Warriors track team, as they beat both Ridge (73-67) and North Hunterdon (75-65). Coach Kolody described the victory as a “triumph,” and righteously so. Congrats, Warriors.
