After shutouts against both the Varsity and JV teams of North Hunterdon in last week’s season openers, the boys from Watchung Hills showed much the same prowess this past Saturday against the teams from Flemington-Hunterdon Central. The Junior Warrior Varsity and JV notched 36-19 and 34-0 victories respectively. Had it not been for 3 additional TDs scored and then taken back on penalties, the Varsity victory would have been even more dramatic.
In the Varsity matchup, QB Johnny Yorey showed off his scrambling skills by rushing for a total of 73 yards – including 2 touchdowns. Yorey also led the defense in tackles, followed closely by Brian Richmond, Wade Agaisse and David Bauer. Power Running Back, Jake Belot, led the team in rushing yards and scored 2 TDs as well. Michael Colantuono – Tight End – also scored on a 33 yard pass from Yorey and Full Back/Kicker Brian Richmond logged an additional 6 points with successful EP kicks.
In a brief post-game interview, Head Coach Keith Vanderbeek expressed mixed reviews about the Varsity victory – suggesting the team was capable of an even-better performance. Coach Vanderbeek mentioned that there was some tweaking to be done before what looks to be an exciting battle against Phillipsburg next Saturday.
On a side note, this coming Friday night will be the WH High School Warrior’s (not Junior) first home game of the season; it is also “Future Warriors Night” and member of the Junior Warriors and Pop Warner programs will be honored on the field prior to the game. If you want to cheer on the future and present of Watchung Hills football, come down and cheer them on!
