Therapeutic Rec Offers Non-Competitive Sports Program

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION OFFERS NON-COMPETITIVE

SPORTS PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

 

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Department is offering a non-competitive sports program for children age 6 to 13 with a developmental disability. “Good Sports” will build a child’s confidence while improving coordination and motor skills. Through the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Sports Institute instructors and the TR staff, children will be introduced to basic skills and rules of basketball and soccer.

Hooked on Hoops will teach the fundamentals of basketball with children enjoying participation in games and drills that will teach dribbling, passing, shooting, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The program is scheduled for Wednesdays, January 22, 29 and February 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at JFK School, 255 Woodmere Street in Raritan, NJ. Cost for the program is $65.00.

Kids Kicks Soccer is a non-competitive games and skill building activity that will teach how to control the soccer ball, dribble, and score a goal, while building confidence, developing motor skills, and having fun with friends. The program is scheduled for Wednesdays, January 22, 29 and February 5, 12, 19, 26 from 6:00 P.M.to 7:00 P.M. at JFK School, 255 Woodmere Street, Raritan
, NJ. Cost for the program is $65.00.

The programs will help children gain the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in community sports programs.

 

Participants must reside in a contracting municipality in Somerset County. Registration will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis by walk-in at North Branch Park, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, Monday to Friday from 
 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. or by fax at 908 429-5508 or phone at 908 526-5650 between 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. if using a credit card.

The Therapeutic Recreation Department provides recreation opportunities for any child or adult with a developmental disability who needs specially designed programs.  Residents must reside in one of Somerset County's 15 participating communities. TR promotes an active leisure lifestyle that improves social, physical, cognitive and emotional functioning and health while enhancing abilities, using recreation to help people with disabilities to develop and use their leisure in ways that support health, functional abilities, educational needs, independence and quality of life.
