N.J. Civil War Memorabilia To Go Up For Auction: N.J. 15th Regiment Company E Photo and Swords

N.J. Civil War Memorabilia To Go Up For Auction

On Wednesday, July 23rd at Philip Weiss Auctions  located on Long Island, N.Y. several lots of Civil War memorabilia will be auctioned off. Weiss, a well known appraiser for the Antique Roadshow, has owned and operated his own auction house for over 20 years.

One of the featured lots in the auction is an original photo of the N.J. 15th Regiment Company E resting on a bluff along with two of Captain J.H. Vanderveer’s swords, one of which he is holding across his lap in the photo. What makes this photo especially rare is that the names of the people in the photo are listed at the bottom along with whether they were wounded or killed in battle. One of Vanderveer’s swords is also inscribed with his name.

Captain J.H. Vanderveer was mustered in as commander of Company E on August 25, 1862. He led his troops until he was wounded in action which forced his resignation on July 19, 1864. He later succumbed to his wounds and is buried at Old Somerville Cemetery in Somerset County, N.J.
