A Walk in Hofheimer Woods

Can't get away today? Take a hike in Warren's Hofheimer Woods trails for a few moments of tranquility.

If you're trapped inside and need a break, join me on a hike through the Hofheimer Woods, located behind the municipal baseball fields.

On a warm July afternoon, the woods were easily accessible, and far enough from traffic to be relaxing—and quiet.

The trail travels through the woods, uphill, passing near the Green Brook border (a few concrete posts can be seen marking the township borders), before traveling back down along Warrenbrook Golf Course fairways to the pond and grotto behind the Watchung Hills Elks Lodge.

This journey didn't go the full circuit, doubling back instead.

The trail is wide and easy to walk, although it's a bit of a climb—but you don't have to walk through shrubs or bushes at any point, making it easy to avoid the kinds of bugs you don't want to find on your person after a hike (ie, ticks).

There are surely deer in these woods, as well as squirrels—and their cousins, the rock squirrel (aka, chipmunks!)—and a fair number of birds overhead.
