'Bagelicious' Offerings Include Sandwiches, Salads Too

Hillsborough's Bagelicious caters to breakfast and lunch tastes with sandwiches and gourmet bagels.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: Located in the Nelson’s Corner Shopping Center in Hillsborough, Bagelicious is a combination bagel place and deli, offering bagels, muffins, sandwiches and Boar’s Head deli meats.

Décor: The restaurant is fairly narrow, though it offers a large amount of seating—both tables and booths— at the front of the shop. The shop’s two drink refrigerators take up the right and left walls leading to the ordering counter, which is flanked by another case with the store’s deli meats and muffins. A coffee nook is in front of the deli counter, providing an open space for those waiting on bagel orders.

The store’s menu spans three walls above the ordering counter, but beware—it begins on the middle wall, continues to the left wall, and ends on the right wall.

The Drinks: It's a fairly normal bagel place, with a selection of iced teas, sodas, hot teas and coffees. Iced coffee is also available for those needing a caffeine rush without the heat.

Entrees: Bagelicious offers a selection of traditional bagels, including garlic, everything, plain, egg, poppy and sesame seed and blueberry. But it also has multi-grain, low carb and sundried tomato bagels, and French toast and cinnamon offerings for those with a sweet tooth. Mini bagels, which the shop says are perfect for those watching their portions, are available by request too.

As with any bagel place, the shop offers a variety of spreads for its bagels, including scallion cream cheese, lox spread, raisin walnut cream cheese and “light” versions of its scallion and vegetable cream cheeses.

The shop features several specialty sandwiches that can be served on a bagel, roll, croissant or wrap, as well as combo orders that come with macaroni salad, potato salad or coleslaw.  Some of the sandwiches pay homage to local fixtures, like the Route 206 (ham, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo), or the Hillsborough Lights (roasted turkey breast, scallion cream cheese and lettuce). Others, like the Kansas Bull (corned beef, pastrami, cole slaw and Russian dressing), the Purple Cow (roast beef, Swiss cheese, cole slaw and Russian dressing) or the New Yorker (Nova Scotia lox, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and Bermuda onion) draw from other areas of the country.

Desserts: Traditional desserts aren’t on the menu at Bagelicious, but the shop offers over 12 varieties of muffins, including cranberry, blueberry, and chocolate cheesecake. There are also danishes, croissants, turnovers and ruggalah, all baked at the store.

Service: Service seemed quick in the hour following lunch, though the morning rush or lunch rush may show a different story. The staff was very willing to forego sides on the combination orders—I don’t like mayonnaise, so the three side salads were a no-go— as well as open about being out of an ingredient for one deli sandwich. Their recommended substitution—sliced cucumber for alfalfa sprouts—worked well with the sandwich too.
