Battle of the Bands on a Musically-Historic Day

Warren's event won't top 1973's Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, but it may launch some musical careers.

Today marks the 38th anniversary of the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, attended by 600,000-plus fans at the famous New York race track where the Allman Brothers Band headlined. Will tonight's Battle of the Bands be as successful?

You Need To Know About Making Friends: Women over 60 who have recently been divorced, widowed or have a husband in a nursing home are invited to join the Somerset County Single Women's Group, which meets in the third floor conference room of the county Human Services Building at 47 Warren Street at 10 a.m. The 50-member group offers relaxed and friendly meetings, which include activities, invited speakers and traveling. You Need To Know About Battling Bands: Tonight's the big night for local talent to showcase their talents—the Recreation Commission's annual Battle of the Bands will feature three area groups in competition at the municipal complex, plus last year's winners Jackie Treehorn and newcomers The Little Devils performing at 7 p.m. at the municipal complex. The winning band gets cash, music store credits and street cred. (The show will be moved to Watchung Hills Regional High School in the event of rain.)

You Need To Know Foreign Films: Impress your over-cultured friends with a discussion of modern French filmmaking, which you can do after watching "Mademoiselle Chambon," a French drama from 2009, tonight at 7 p.m. at the, 290 Plainfield Ave. in Berkeley Heights, as part of the library's Summer International Film Festival. Admission is gratuitement, as the French say (according to Google Translate).

You Need To Know Game On: The Long Hill Township Public Library offers an evening of free video and board game fun for students in the sixth grade and up. The library's Teen Game Night, from 7 to 8 p.m. offers  snacks to enjoy while playing Wii, PS2 and various board games.
