VFW Visit to Chelsea Assisted Living Salutes Veterans Day in Warren

Time for reflection, as well as public ceremony.

The Veterans of Foreign War Bernardsville Memorial Post 7858, which also represents Basking Ridge and surrounding towns, is planning both public ceremonies and time spent for reflection with fellow veterans at The Chelsea at Warren Assisted Living on Monday, Veterans Day.

At 8 a.m. on Veterans Day, the VFW post raise the flag in the center of Bernardsville at 8 a.m., said William E. Staehle, post commander.

Later, two of the post's veterans, Bob Walsh and Perry Hamburg, will be meeting with residents of The Chelsea at Warren Assisted Living at 10:30 a.m. to socialize and talk about the significance of Veterans Day, as well discussing their military service, Staehle said.

Others members of the post will attend a veterans’ meeting, with coffee and fellowship, to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge, according to Staehle.

Other veterans and military family members from Warren, which is part of the Somerset Hills YMCA's coverage area, also are invited to that get-together, according to the YMCA.

At 4 p.m., the veterans will be back in Bernardsville to lower the flag at the Bernardsville Post Office off Quimby Lane. They then will walk to the Station Pub & Grub where Diane Carr, proprietor, has arranged a “table of honor” and a special dinner for veterans to enjoy, Staehle said.

"Mostly, we will be reflecting on our military experience and thinking about those men and women defending our freedom in military units in Afghanistan and on other dangerous assignments around the world," Staehle said.
