Library's Hypnosis Programs Aimed at Beating Cravings, Procrastination

Sign up for any or all of the free sessions to learn self-hypnosis for losing weight and creating a healthier lifestyle.

If you've been fretting about fitting into your bathing suit this summer, then a series of workshops offered at Warren Township Library might help you overcome dieting and exercise distractions.

Hypno-Counselor Susan Lembo's hypnosis program in January was so popular, the library has invited her back to conduct a series called "Hypnosis for Weight Loss," which was offered this week and wil be repeated at 10 a.m. May 11, 25 and June 1.

"People were absolutely fascinated by the topic," said Marcela Dunham, the library's Public Relations and Adult Programming Coordinator.

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of heightened awareness, said Lembo, and when people are relaxed, they are more receptive. After guiding participants into a relaxed state, she will use imagery to reinforce basic concepts, such as healthy eating and the benefits of exercise, which will be discussed in the first part of each class. Lembo offered an example of imagery that could be used: "You look forward to exercise and each time you exercise you enjoy it more."

"We all know we need to exercise and eat fewer calories," said Lembo, a certified Hypno-Counselor for the past three years. "Why aren't people doing it? Hypnosis helps people do that."

Even though most participants show a willingness to learn, Lembo said part of the seminar will deal with overcoming resistance, and if people bring up a specific challenge with a certain food, she would include that as well.

Lembo also will teach attendees self-hypnosis so they can continue what they learned in class.

She said in her experience with similar workshops, nearly all participants have lost at least a few pounds. One man saw results after only one session, she said, when he passed up his weakness, a red velvet cake, in a store for the first time.

But Lembo cautions that this is a lifestyle change, not a fad diet or a quick fix.

"I will give you the tools to make better choices over the course of your life," said Lembo, adding that past participants have not only lost pounds, but gained an added benefit in improved sleep.

Lembo, a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists, also has been a nationally certified massage therapist since 1994. She specializes in individual and group sessions for weight loss, smoking cessation, stress and pain management. She also has helped people overcome insomnia, public speaking anxiety, fear of flying and even helped clients improve their golf game.

This program requires pre-registration, which people can do for all or one of the sessions by going to the Warren library's website and clicking on the adult calendar or calling 908-754-5554, ext 64.

If people can't make these sessions, Lembo offers private instruction in her Whitehouse office and other public seminars, which can be found on her website at www.effortlesshypnosis.com. She also can be contacted at susan@effortlesshypnosis.com or 908-246-3096.
