You know kids can act, but can they do it on stage?

The township Recreation Commission's playground program has a special prgram on tap today—former New York Knicks guard John Starks will be stopping by at 9:30 a.m., with Assemblyman Jon  Bramnick, Mayor Gary DiNado, Deputy Mayor Carolann Garafola and Township Committeeman Vic Sordillo. The event is aimed at encouraging the youngsters to spend some time reading this summer, and is part of Starks' ongoing efforts at getting kids to read more.

You Need To Know Little Thespians: Warren Township Library has several programs today offering chance for little ones to try acting, beginning at 11 a.m. for 2 and 3-year olds, and repeating at noon for 4- and 5-year-olds.

You Need To Know Carnivals: Berkeley Height's Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast tonight and Saturday. The event features food, including beer and wine, rides, games and music for the entire family. The feast is held at Mt. Carmel field, at River Road and Plainfield Avenue in Berkeley Heights.

You Need To Know Classic Rock: If you love the rocking sounds of the '70s, head to Rolf's or the Tap Room at the Somerset Hills Hotel tonight or tomorrow night.  Rolf's is featuring Exit 135 tonight and The Pirates tomorrow night. If your tastes run towards a jazzier sound, visit Uproot, where the Brynn Stanely Trio will play tonight and the Robbie Scott New Deal Trio will be Saturday.

You Need To Know Cats: The furry mammals, that is, not the Broadway show ... the Garden State Cat Show is underway this weekend at the Garden State Exhibition Center in Somerset. The show, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, will include presentations on keeping your cat healthy and happy, as well as having fine felines on display.

You Need To Know You Need a Laugh: Maestro's, on Route 206 in Hillsborough, is hosting a Comedy Night at 9 p.m. Saturday. Local funny guys will open, followed by performers including Buda, Adam Mamawala and Joe DeLong. Laughter is the best medicine, and this prescription will set you back $10 (plus a two drink minimum).
