Memorial Project Receives Trade Towers' Steel Girder

Mayor, police chief bring first piece of memorial to Warren.

The twisted, brown steel girder from the World Trade Center that will be used to create Warren's Sept. 11 memorial lies on wood blocks at the Community Volunteer Fire Co. firehouse now.

The girder was brought to Warren March 10 on a truck driven by Mayor Gary DiNardo, accompanied by Chief of Police Russell Leffert, from John F. Kennedy Airport, where pieces of the towers destroyed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are stored.

It's hard to imagine the impact seeing such a massive piece of steel bent in half can have on bystanders, but it's also hard not to see it and remember that fateful day. But the firefighters and police who accompanied the truck carrying the steel through the township stood looking at the girder quietly, reflecting on its significance.
