Patch Asks: When's The Right Time For Kids To Get A Cell Phone?

Is it more helpful for you in keeping tabs on them, or for them to keep tabs on friends?

Sooner or later, you'll be confronted with a decision: is it time to get your kids a cell phone?


There's a lot to thin about: start with a pre-paid and limited plan? How about a phone with GPS so you know where your kids are?

Warren mom—and practicing psychologist—Jane Feldman notes many families wonder when it's the best time.

"I do hear a lot about choosing a good age for children to get cell phones from their parents," Dr. Feldman said.  "There are lots of questions about appropriateness for children of cell phone use and even social media access."

She added she hears parents asking such questions as how do parents know thier kids are ready for a cell phone?  What kind of phone to get?  What about texting?
