Puppy Dogs and Looney Tunes

Outdoor movie series kicks off with a focus on dogs and a feature with Daffy Duck.

Thursday night's opening of the township Recreation Commission's outdoor movie series enjoyed a warm night and a half-dozen special guests: dogs ready for adoption from Rawhide Rescue.

Laurie Green, of Rawhide Rescue, noted one of the dogs—a young female pit bull mix whose affectionate nuzzling made lots of friends at the event—was the last of a group of dogs brought up from animal shelters located in the South following a series of devastating tornadoes in the spring.

"That was something we learned after (Hurricane) Katrina," she said, adding the shelters had made arrangements to outsource the placement of their dogs in the event of such a situation in order to make room for the many, new homeless pets arriving because of the storms.

She also brought a group of mixed terrier puppies, who slept quietly, despite constant attention from kids and adults.

The program tied in with Thursday's feature film, "Big Red," from 1962. The movie, based on a novel by Jim Kjelgarrd, tells the story of an Irish setter purchased by a wealthy man to be a champion show dog—but becomes a better companion to the boy hired to care for him.

About 50 residents attended the event, which also included a short Looney Tunes cartoon to open, featuring Daffy Duck impersonating  musical figures of the '40s and '50s.

The series continues next Thursday in the field behind Warren Township Library, with a showing of the animated feature "Madagascar Escape 2 Africa" at 8 p.m.
