BERNARDS – A kickoff press conference for the 20th annual Curbing Hunger food drive will be held MONDAY, JUNE 2, at 12:00 P.M. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. St. Mark’s is a founding sponsor of the annual curbside food-collection program that takes place throughout Somerset County during the month of June.
Somerset County Freeholder Director Patrick Scaglione and Curbing Hunger Inc. Board President Chuck Knill will announce that canned food donations will be collected this year at the curb on regular county recycling days from June 2 through 27. There is also an online donation option at www.curbinghunger2014.org
The need for food donations is still high due to the lagging economy and continuing recovery from Hurricane Sandy. Supplies are traditionally low during non-holiday periods, and demand is always higher during the summer months when children do not receive subsidized school lunches.
Launched in 1995 in Somerset County, the Curbing Hunger program this year also has partner agencies in Essex, Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Morris, Warren and Hunterdon counties on board.
Also scheduled to attend the press conference are Congressman Leonard Lance; Assemblyman Erik Peterson; members of the Somerset County Board of Freeholders; Food Bank Network Executive Director Marie Scannell; Curbing Hunger Inc. board members; representatives from program supporters MyCentralJersey.com and Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus; and representatives of AmpYourGood.com, which provides the online donation option for the Curbing Hunger drive.
Other invited officials include Gov. Chris Christie; U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez; Congressman Rush Holt; New Jersey legislators from Districts 16, 17, 21, 22, 23 and 25; and the mayors and governing bodies of Somerset County’s 21 municipalities.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is located at 140 S. Finley Ave., Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. For more information about the kickoff event, contact the Somerset County Public Information Office at (908) 231-7020 or email@example.com
