Three Generations of Veterans Gather for VJ Day Event

Carolann and Ralph Garafola join event honoring World War II veterans.

An assisted living center's event honoring World War II veterans on VJ Day—Aug. 2—brought together several generations of veterans in Warren Township Committeewoman Carolann Garafola's family.

Garofola and her husband, Ralph—a veteran of the Korean War, where he served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps—attended the event at the Arden Courts facility in Whippany to honor the service of her great-uncle, Angelo Sabilia.

Sabilia, 90, still remembers building Jeeps and motorcycles for the 105th Army in Caserta, Italy, during World War II.

The Garafolas were joined in honoring Sabilia by Dominic Messina, of Fairfield, a great-nephew to Sibilia who served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam.
