Warren Brook Senior Center to Host Holiday Celebrations and Other Activities

Holiday parties and tree trimming, consumer fraud program, do yoga while laughing, and more coming up.

The Warren Brook Senior Center in Warren Township, operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging, is hosting a wide variety of activities in December, including some occasions special to the season. 

All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the center at 908-753-9440, at 500 Warrenville Road in Warren. 

The center, open to all Somerset County residents, generally is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. All of the county's senior centers will be closed on Dec. 12, 19, 24 and 25.

Here are special events scheduled for the month of December.

Dec. 2 — Tree Decorating Party and Herbed Fresh Vegetable Dip Tasting, 10:30 a.m. Come and join other members as we trim the center’s Christmas tree.  After the tree lighting, enjoy crackers and an herbed fresh vegetable dip.

Dec. 3 — Dental and Oral Hygiene Program with Dr. Huma Mirza, DDS, Smile Warren, 11:10 a.m. Learn the importance of establishing an oral health baseline, what a dental hygiene program should include and how to properly maintain good oral hygiene.

Dec. 4. — Annual Holiday Party with Entertainment by Sophistication, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. In the morning, Jean Marie Fusco will lead the group in a variety of party games and Christmas caroling. Patrons will enjoy a special lunch and then dance the afternoon away with Jean Marie becoming a DJ and entertainer.  Advanced reservations are required. Contact the Warren Brook Senior Center. County transportation will depart the center at 2 p.m.  Due to the late departure, the A&P shopping trip will be canceled.

Dec. 6 — “White Christmas” movie Discussion and trivia with Catherine DeBerry, Adult Services Librarian, Somerset County Library System, Warren Branch, 10:15 a.m. White Christmas (1954) is a warm, nostalgic movie that is one of the all-time great musicals. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye star in the Christmas classic as a couple of veterans who form a singing duo. Smitten by another singing pair played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, the guys tag along on the girls’ trip to a Vermont Lodge to perform a holiday show. After viewing the movie, we will discuss the movie and share some movie trivia. The transportation van will depart the center at 12:45 p.m. for the return trip home).

Dec. 9 — “Spine/Back Issues and Conditions” by Tiffany Carter Fiore, PA-C, Somerset Medical Community Health Center, 10:30 a.m. According to the center is important to understand that back pain is a symptom of a medical condition, not a diagnosis itself. Learn a few tips to help take better care of your spine and back.

Dec. 10 — "FED-UP” Senior Consumer Fraud” by Peggy Anastos, Director of Outreach, Division of Consumer Affairs, Office of the Attorney General, 11:10 a.m. Learn about FED-UP, (Senior Fraud Education and Protection Program) and how it can provide practical information for self-protection when doing business, avoiding scams, protecting your identity and credit, making investments, applying for mortgages and managing your health.

Dec. 11 – Free blood Pressure screenings with Susan Anastario, R.N., Community Visiting Nurse Association, 10:30 a.m.

Dec. 12 — center closed

Dec. 13 and 20 — Brains and Games with Adrienne, 10:30 a.m.

Dec. 16 — “Laugh Out Loud and Celebrate Life” by Yvette Halpin, Certified Laughter Leader and Yoga Teacher, 10:30 a.m. Laughter is a breakthrough in integrative healing strategies and when combined with breathing and stretching, it will engage the feelings of the Body, Mind and Spirit. This program will combine very gentle Yoga stretches with lots of chuckles, giggles and laughter.

Dec. 19 — center closed

Dec. 23 — Jazz Trio Performance, 10:30 a.m. Three students from Bridgewater High school joined talents and formed a small jazz band and they are coming to the center to entertain us.

Dec. 24 and 25 — Holiday — center closed

Dec. 27 — Chair dancing exercises

Dec. 30 — Reasoning: Mind Your Mind Mental Exercises, 10:30 a.m. Reasoning is a mental searching process for finding answers to problems, using acquired knowledge and wisdom. Together the group will do some mental exercises that are designed to give your brain a workout.
