Warren's Nicole D'Angelo to Receive County Arts Awards

Will perform at Oct. 20 banquet.

Nicole D’Angelo, a 2011 Watchung Hills Regional graduate studying art therapy at Montclair State, will perform at the 2011 Somerset County Excellence in the Arts Awards Banquet Oct. 20.

The awards program, sponsored by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission, honors individuals and organizations that show exemplary leadership and dedication to the fine and performing arts in Somerset County. 

"I was very excited to hear from my parents that I had been selected for the award," D'Angelo said. "I am looking very much forward to the dinner and I am working hard now preparing a piece to perform. It was a great honor to have been nominated and selected to receive the award."

The dinner will be held Oct. 20 at The Twin Brooks Country Club, 600 Mountain Blvd. The Master of Ceremonies for the dinner and awards celebration will be Ofelia Garcia, chair of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The program is open to the public—reservations and additional information can be found on the county’s website. Tickets are $55 per person. The registration deadline is Oct. 14.

“The awards dinner provides an opportunity for the community to show its appreciation for the many talented artists, art advocates and educators that are dedicated to promoting the arts in Somerset County,” said Somerset County Freeholder Patrick Scaglione, the commission’s liaison. “This year’s recipients of Excellence in the Arts Awards have demonstrated outstanding talent, vision and leadership.”

Other award winners include Aspiring Young Artist Award winners Jackie Lin, from Bridgewater-Raritan High School, and Kathleen Fritz, a home-schooled artist from Hillsborough. Ellyn Shain, Art and Riding Instructor at Lord Stirling Stables, will be recognized in the category of Excellence in Arts Education and Mentorship for her innovative and imaginative instruction in equine art. 

Two individuals will be presented with the Arts in the Community Award.  The first recipient is Janet Cantore-Watson, coordinator of the Creative Arts Program at Somerset County Vocational & Technical Schools, who will be recognized for THINK PINK Cause a Co*Motion, which promotes community arts outreach and breast cancer public service awareness through dance.  Jessica Prakopcyk, director of Dance, Arts and Gymnastics at the Somerset Hills YMCA, will receive the award for her exemplary dedication to inspiring students and young adults in the areas of dance, music, visual art and performance.
