YMCA Alerts Members of Possible Credit and Debit Overdrafts

Thursday email says security was not compromised and alerts will be sent during the day to update.

The sent an email to its members late this morning announcing that multiple charges may have inadvertantly been posted to the credit and debit cards to members signed up to make such automatic payments on a monthly basis.

"Our software provider has alerted us to the fact that certain membership drafts (credit and debit cards) may have seen multiple charges occuring on their bank or credit card statements this morning from other YMCAs," said an email sent to members shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The email then emphasized that the overdrafts are "not a hacking issue and the security of your account has not been compromised."

"We are working diligently with our software provider to remedy the situation today and will send additional communications throughout the day to update you," the email said.

The email did not specify how many of the YMCA's many thousands of members might have been affected, or approximate the amount. Further information was not immediately answered through phone calls and emails to the YMCA staff. Further specifics will be posted on Patch as available.

The communication from the YMCA said that any any incorrect charges will be reversed or reimbursed, and any overdraft fees also will be reimbursed for members who were improperly charged.

"Please be assured that we are aware of the importance of this situation and are taking all steps to ensure that it is properly remedied," the email said.

The email urged member with specific questions or concerns, to contact 908-630-3505. That number is a recorded message, and asks for the caller to leave information for a return call.
