21st Century Learning "Kick-Off"

"21st Century Fluencies" Parent Presentation

Lee Crockett, internationally known speaker and author of “Understanding The Digital Generation,” presented the program, “21st Century Fluencies” to a group of parents on Monday at the Warren Middle School. His presentation was the “kick off” for the township’s “21st Century Learning” initiatives. A similar workshop had been given to teachers in the morning.

Much of Crockett’s discussion focused on technological innovation. He showed prototypes of cars that are controlled by a joystick and self charging cell phones.

“Tomorrow will jump ahead of us with the explosion of digital information," he said. "Are we preparing our children for our future or our past?”

“Kids today are comfortable surfing and texting. Simple applications have powerful implications in education.  Education prepares students for their lives beyond the classroom.”

His words were well received. Parent, Cecelia Fontana said, “Parents need to think ahead.”

Also, Brad Tirahunhari, a parent with an IT background, said, “I see this is happening and I am so glad for our children.”

One parent asked if “21st Century Learning” is also happening at Watchung Hills Regional High School. While the answer was "no," Crockett was quick to explain that the skills Warren Township students learn K-8 will be well used in their high school careers.

By introducing the “21st Century Learning” in the Warren Public Schools, students will be challenged to uncover and discover solutions using technological resources. Crockett talked about how students may design a cereal box as a project. They would be responsible for the design and would also determine the volume of the box using their mathematical skills. This is an example of what is called, “Hands on Process Learning.”

Parent, Marcy Barros said, “I am very pleased with the presentation. I feel we are headed in the right direction.”

Parent, Nancy Gann agreed, “I’m thrilled that our district is doing this program for our children.”

In November, 20 teachers in the district will be selected for the next phase of “21st Century Learning.”  They will work with Lee Crockett to thoughtfully and carefully “roll out” a plan to integrate the new structure in the Warren’s schools.

Mary Ellen Roberts is the district’s technology supervisor who works on curriculum.

“We want to start the conversation and develop a common vocabulary to move ‘21st Century Learning’ forward in our schools," she said.
