Clear Skies for Keeping Babies Safe 5K

About 100 runners join Warren group's fundraiser—including a scary old man.

First, to the girl overheard to say, "This one old guy passed us and he was wheezing—it was scary": I apologize, I didn't mean to frighten you.

But, hey, I passed you!

As one of the last runners crossing the finish line in the Keeping Babies Safe 5K Sunday at Harry Dunham Park in Basking Ridge's Liberty Corner section, I was just pleased to have finished ahead of someone (I also shaved about six minutes off the time of my first 5K—last year's Watchung Hills Regional Municipal Alliance 5k). My hat's off to 17-year-old Matthew Davis, of Randolph, who finished the event in 19:14.3, and the amazing Steve Nix, a 58-year-old from Denville who did it in 23:13.7.

I joined the event to help the great work Keeping Babies Safe is doing, more than set a land speed record. Proceeds from the event will help the group continue to educate new mothers and medical workers on safe sleep products, as well as provide safe cribs to hospitals and day care centers.

About 100 runners registered, and as many walkers, ranging in age from 8 to 65.

Preliminary race results are attached, while preliminary fund raising totals will take a bit longer to obtain.
