Prowl Around with Live Owls at the Long Hill Library
Do you know how many species of owls live in N.J.? Tuesday's presentation at the Long Hill Library & Raptor Trust can help you find out.
The Raptor Trust says, "There are 18 species of owls in North America; eight of these can be found in our area. Some species, like the Screech Owl and Great-horned Owl, live here year-round; others, like the Snowy Owl and the Saw-whet Owl, are winter visitors."
Want to know which ones might be in your back yard? Do you hear "whooo whooo whooo whooo" or "whoo cooks for youuu" or "Hooo-ooo" or other screeching and maniacal shrieking? Might be an owl. The Raptor Trust can help you figure out which owl that hooter might be.
We'd also like you to know that the Long Hill Library is having an Owls of New Jersey Event on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. We'll have live owls here at the library (prowling) accompanied by someone from The Raptor Trust who'll tell us about the lives of these nocturnal birds of prey. All of New Jersey’s owl species are shown and discussed, including some of the less-known winter visitors.
