Trade Poor Report Cards For Opportunity To Discover Reasons For Difficulties with Math & Learning

Warren, New Jersey, April 16, 2014 – April is Math Awareness Month and local brain training center LearningRx Warren is celebrating by giving hope to students who struggle with Math. Area residents are welcomed to come to the center and receive a discounted cognitive skills assessment in exchange for less-than-stellar math grades.

During the month of April, anyone under the age of 19 can bring in a report card or math test with a grade of a C+ or below to receive a discounted assessment, which measures brain skills like processing speed, attention, logic & reasoning, visual and auditory processing, and memory. The results of the assessment can help students decide what steps to take in strengthening weak cognitive skills.

“Struggles with math, more formally known as dyscalculia, are often blamed on genetics, poor teaching or a student not trying hard enough,” says Marcia Douglas, Owner/Executive Director of LearningRx Warren. “In reality, over 80 percent of students who struggle with learning - be it arithmetic, geometry or calculus – do so because of weak cognitive skills. In math, weaknesses might include numerical concepts, working or long term memory, sequential processing or visual processing. The good news is that customized, personal brain training can strengthen these brain skills to make learning, understanding and applying math easier and faster for anyone.”

LearningRx Warren has had tremendous results with students who have enrolled in their signature brain training programs since opening four years ago; over 30,000 clients have benefited from the same training in more than 80 centers across the nation. The MathRx program, one of many customized training programs, works to improve math and higher thinking skills by developing the broad set of underlying cognitive skills that are required to effectively learn mathematical concepts. LearningRx Warren’s most recent MathRx graduate, post-tested just last week, and is now excelling in all areas of school. As a result of training, over fifty percent of the gap in the student’s core cognitive skills was closed. The student’s working memory, a vital skill for math success, jumped from the 20th to the 90th percentile – a staggering 70 percentile point increase.

The Warren Center’s results and the effectiveness of LearningRx brain training are supported by a host of scientific research and clinical studies - --most recently, research funded by the National Institute of Health. Given the importance of math, science and technology, and our national weakness in these areas as compared to other nations, the National Science Foundation funded a one million dollar study of LearningRx brain training. The independent study was conducted by Dr. Oliver W. Hill, Jr., a professor of psychology at Virginia State University. Hill compared 340 middle school students who spent 2 hours a week for one semester at their school’s computer labs using the online version of LearningRx training exercises to an equal number of students who received no such training. Those who played the online games, he found, improved significantly not only on measures of cognitive abilities compared to their peers, but also on Virginia’s annual Standards of Learning exams. Hill is now conducting a follow-up study of college students in Texas. Preliminary reports show even stronger gains when the training is one-one-one like the training offered at LearningRx Warren.
