Census Tool Shows Little Income Disparity Locally

New interactive map details income, rent by Census tracts.

The United States Census Bureau's American Community Survey has tabulated an amazing amout of information about towns and cities across the country.

Among all the data collected are details on income and rents that has been collected in an interactive map called "Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks." The map shows the median household income in each Census tract, allowing comparison for towns, and neighborhoods, across the country.

Using shades of green to designate the various median income ranges, the map can be a colorful montage in an area of income diversity—or a stately hunter green block for an area like Warren with only three Census tracts, both towards the scale's higher ranges.

Two of Warren's Census tracts, covering all of the township north of Mount Horeb Road and north of Mountain Boulevard east of Mount Bethel Road, reported median incomes above the top of the scale.

The tract west of Mount Bethel Road claims the top median income for Warren, with $176,563, while east of Mount Bethel Road is $131,447.

The third tract—south of Mount Horeb and east of Mount Bethel— shows a median income of $126,150.

The site says the statewide middle income average is $63,101.80 to $78,762.60.

The map's average rent detail is similarly monochromatic—but surprisingly affordable, if the averages are to be believed. The two Census tracts with the highest median incomes also have the highest rents (not surprising), at $1,162 on the west side and $1,173 on the east side reported (surprising). The third tract reports an average rent of just $796 (the rental properties likely income low- and moderate-income properties, which may make up a substantial percentage of Warren's rental market).

The map may not provide much information you didn't already have, but it is interesting to see and consider.
