WHRMA 5K Run/Walk Day

The Watchung Hills Regional Municipal Alliance will hold its annual WHRMA Alliance 5K Run/Walk Day at 9 a.m. Oct. 23 at Watchung Lake’s Mobus Field.

The WHRMA is a community partnership that comprises Warren, Watchung, Green Brook, and Long Hill Townships. As a Municipal Alliance, we are part of the NJ Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The WHRMA identifies community needs and develops prevention plans to address those areas of need. In the last few decades, we have continued to witness unacceptable levels of:
• illicit drug use
• juvenile delinquency
• misuse of prescription drugs
• school drop-out
• underage drinking
• teen pregnancy

Research has shown that local-level planning and implementation through community coalitions, like the Watchung Hills Municipal Alliance, is an effective approach to preventing substance abuse, under-age drinking, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, and more.

The group provides prevention education for all, from elementary school students to our senior citizens. Our programs address many areas of need including:
• intervention, assessment and referral for all of the citizens in our four-town region
• support to those dealing with addicted or mentally-ill loved ones
• training in our school systems, police departments, Parent Teacher Organizations etc.
