Fee Waiver Passed; Township Looks to Launch Business Group

Warren Township becomes first in Somerset County to adopt economic incentive program.

Businesses moving into Warren Township can receive up to $5,000 in fee waivers under a new economic development program approved by the Township Committee, May 25.

The committee approved changes to "Buildings and Housing" ordinances creating the procedure for businesses modifying commercial space for new uses to get exemptions from some planning and construction office fees. The fee waivers are available only in specified zones in the township, and apply only to work done in existing structures.

"In tough economic times, it's a good idea to do what we can to encourage development," Committee George Lazo said.

The committee also passed a resolution launching a Business Development Committee, which members said they hoped would help bring additional businesses to town.

Originally discussed at the May 3 meeting, the committee may be comprised of appointed residents, representatives of the township's business community and Township Committee members. The members said it would be helpful to have such a group to help develop businesses in the wake of the collapse of the Warren Business and Professional Association in recent years.

The committee members also said residents and business owners interested in serving on the committee should contact the township.
