Freeholder Director Walsh Visits Red Cross Youth Council

Attends February meeting to discuss role of freeholders with local high school students.

The Youth Council at the American Red Cross of Greater Somerset had the opportunity to learn about local government during a visit by Freeholder Director Patricia L. Walsh to their monthly meeting on Feb. 9, at the Red Cross location in Somerville.

Walsh, a former mayor of Green Brook, spoke to the group of 25 students, educating them on the role of a County Freeholder, the process of becoming an elected official and the challenges officials face working to preserve a high standard of service during tough economic times.

“I’m speaking to the future leaders of America,” said Walsh. “If you’re involved in your community now, it means that you always will be.”

The Red Cross Youth Council, made up of more than 30 students from local high schools, meets once a month to plan local community projects including an annual blood drive, clothing drives to benefit the Red Cross, and food drives to benefit local community food banks.

"The American Red Cross has a long history of encouraging the active engagement of youth in our community through our Red Cross Clubs and our Youth Council initiatives,’ said Amy Sutton, chapter CEO. ‘We understand the power of young people and their ability to help make a difference in the lives of others and want them to get excited about their duty as citizens. Freeholder Walsh has inspired them to consider elected office as one avenue to help make a difference,” added Sutton.
