Memorial Day Events Will Include Monument Dedication

Rescheduled by Hurricane Sandy, the township will feature the dedication before the annual parade.

On Memorial Day—May 27—residents will have the opportunity to join in honoring the heroes from Sept. 11th and our veterans.

At 9:30 a.m., at the municipal complex, the Warren Township Committee – Mayor Victor J. Sordillo, Deputy Mayor Gary P. DiNardo, Committeepersons Carolann Garafola, George K. Lazo and Mick Marion, in cooperation with the Warren Township Fire Department, Police Department and Rescue Squad, will dedicate the newly-erected Heroes Memorial Monument.

The dedication will be co-hosted by Committeewoman Carolann Garafola and Deputy Mayor Gary P. DiNardo. Remarks will be made by Police Chief Russell Leffert, Former Fire Chief Tim McGowan, and Rescue Squad President, Paul Rapps. This dedication was originally scheduled for Nov. 4, 2012, but was delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

The monument was constructed in the summer and fall of 2012 and may be viewed at the municipal complex. A granite boulder at the foot of the pillars memorializes the disaster with the date, Sept. 11, 2001 and the number of heroes who perished:

  • New York Fire Department – 343;
  • New York Police Department – 23,
  • Port Authority Police Department – 37;
  • and Emergency Medical Service – 8 with the words, “We Will Never Forget.”

The construction of the project was under the leadership of Chief Russell Leffert and Deputy Mayor Gary P. DiNardo and the design was prepared by Ralph Garafola.

Donations are still needed to complete lighting, signage, and other work. For those still interested in making a donation, donor forms can be found on the township’s website by clicking on the link for 9/11 Memorial Donation Form. To date, over $44,000 has been donated.

The Township Committee and the Warren Township First Responders request that you mark this date on your calendar and join us to honor all the first responders who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.

At 11 a.m. following the dedication, the annual Memorial Day Parade will step off.

Residents are encouraged to join the parade as participants or spectators. Following the parade, there will be a memorial service and wreath lying at the Veteran’s Monument at the municipal complex.
