New Municipal Sign OK'd

Final plans calls for taller, narrower sign with LED messages.

The Township Committee approved a $23,520 bid from JHM Signs, of Phillipsburg, to construct a 10-foot tall sign featuring a scrolling LED message sign, Thursday.

The project follows a July recommendation by the Recreation Commission to construct a permanent sign to replace the existing sign by the Watchung Hills Elks Lodge at the intersection of Bardy Road and Mountain Boulevard.

The final plans include a sign noting the Elks Lodge, but puts the township at the top, with a directional arrow pointing to the Bardy Road parking lot entrances for the municipal complex.

The original plan envisioned a wider sign that the final plan calls for, shaving about 2½-feet off. The sign will have a sandblasted header, reducing maintenance expenses.

In recommending such a sign in July, Recreation Director Eleanora Hermann said the electronic message board can be used to update residents with emergency information, recreation programs, and messages from local non-profit groups.

"You could put one message on it at a time or you can allow it to scroll and do messages," she said. "It'll be wireless, so it will be controlled by my computer, so myself or a helper of mine can change messages at anytime."
