Pending Traffic Light Installation Splits Committee

Committeeman Vic Sordillo casts symbolic vote against resolution on signal at Mt. Horeb and King George roads.

Signs on Mt. Horeb and King George roads have been warning drivers of pending construction, but so far the county crews coming to install a new traffic light haven't shown up.

One of the last steps before the work could begin was taken at the July 21 Township Committee meeting, when committee members split on a resolution authorizing the county to undertake the work.

Committeeman Vic Sordillo voted against the resolution, as he has in previous discussions about the light.

"I truly believe that people speed up at yellow lights, they don't slow down, and there will be tragic accident there," he said.

Horseshoe Drive resident Joe Lakatos also noted his opposition to the light, which he felt is unnecessary.

"I've driven that road for over 30 years...without being the least bit close to being in an accident," Lakatos said. "I don't want to rain on your parade but these traffic signals are by bit and piece destroying the rural character of our town."

Committeeman Mal Plager, who had been involved in an accident at the intersection, noted police recommended a light because of the number of accidents.

"I frankly didn't want a light there either but I honestly don't know how you could look at it and not think about the safety," Plager said.
