Rail Coalition to Discuss Tunnel Plans

Monday morning meeting to feature Amtrak VP Howard Sackel.

Elected officials, transportation professionals and the public are invited to the next Raritan Valley Rail Coalition meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The featured speaker will be Howard Sackel, acting assistant vice president of Amtrak’s high-speed rail program.  Mr. Sackel is project manager in charge of Amtrak’s Gateway Tunnel project.

He will discuss the Gateway project, proposed Northeast Corridor improvements and the important long-term economic and transportation impacts the project could have on the Raritan Valley and Northeast Corridor lines, New Jersey and the entire northeastern region of the United States.

Mr. Sackel is the former director of the ARC Project for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.   

The meeting will be held in the third-floor freeholders’ meeting room in the Somerset County Administration Building, located at 20 Grove St.  Free parking is available in the Bernie Field Parking Deck adjacent to the Somerset County Administration Building; the deck entrance is off East High Street.
