Voters to Choose New High School Board Member Tuesday

When current Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education member Peter Fallon decided to end his bid for re-election, the field for the only contested election narrowed.

Local Realtor Diane Belcuore is facing Warren Township Board of Education President Gregory Przybylski for the three-year term, and voters will decide steps into the high school board role.

Voters will also, of course, fill two seats on the Township Committee—with Gary DiNardo and Vic Sordillo making uncontested bids for re-election.

Voters will also fill three seats on the Warren Township Board of Education, with current board member Kathy Helewa seeking election to her first term (she was appointed to fill the balance of Paticia Tobin's term when she stepped down). Gregory Steier and Desiree DeNourie are also on the ballot.

For her bid for the board seat, Belcuore said she wants to focus on college placement for Watchung Hills graduates, adding she'd want to monitor recent changes on the high school's course classifications to make sure the changes are working. 

“As a Realtor in the district, I understand the correlation between our school performance and our property values," Belcuore said. "I am committed to contributing my skills in human resource and financial management to achieve continuous improvement at WHRHS.”

For his part, Przybylski stressed his goals of improving coordination of programming between the high school and the sending districts, and a desire to provide support to the school's athletic programs.  

"As a soccer and basketball coach over the past five years for the Watchung Hills and Warren recreational programs, I recognize the importance of athletics in the physical and social development of our children," he said. "I have already helped enhance the equipment for one of WHRHS athletic programs and want to further improve the athletic opportunities for our children when they enter the high school."

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday—be sure to check your district's voting location since some have changed because of the ongoing power outages.
