5 Things To Know About Mt. Horeb School

School starts with new technology and money-saving improvements.

Mt. Horeb School opens it doors tomorrow, with 320 students expected. Here's a look at what the students will find inside the school doors:

You Need To Know The New Teachers Students Will Meet: Several new faces will greet students tomorrow, including Jessica Matos, a Classroom Paraprofessional splitting her time between Central and Mt. Horeb schools; Second grade teacher Darlene Bernhard, filling in for Rachel Hildebrand who is out on family leave; and kindergarten teacher Jaclyn Aptekar, filling in for Kristen Stoyanov (out on child rearing leave.).

You Need To Know Who Won't Be There: Special Education Teacher Dawn Gauvin will also be out for a family leave, until Dec. 5.

You Need To Know The PTO's Plans: The Mt. Horeb PTO also has some special plans for this year, with many projects dovetailing with the students' lessons. The plans include Author's Day, an electronic field trip to Colonial Williamsburg, and a special event for fifth-graders at the end of the school year. To pay for the projects, the PTO will be fundraising through the sales of Kidzstuff coupon books and a dinner-dance. You can also help support the PTO by buying “21st Century Learning” T-shirts—with a graphic designed by a Mt. Horeb student. s to be worn throughout

You Need To Know About The School's New Technology: Last year's PTO fundraising paid for two ELMO document cameras, which teachers can use to display any document on the classroom whiteboard (which every class at Mt. Horeb has, by the way).

You Need To Know About Mt. Horeb's Energy Saving: The Board of Education approved a $92,000 project to install automatic temperature controls in the school, which will help save taxpayers on utility costs, and make the school's rooms more comfortable.

Editor's note: This week, we're looking at the beginning of the new school year through the changes in the schools and the districts.
