Board Member's Objection Solved With Compromise

Warren Township Board of Education members resolve concerns over open-ended hiring resolutions.

Not wanting to prevent approval of contracts for two special education teachers, but also not wanting to vote in favor of open-ended terms for their mileage reimbursement, Warren Township Board of Education member Don Huber was stuck, Tuesday night.

At issue was a relatively small matter, but one of great importance to Huber, who often questions details in the bills and contracts approved by the board—contracts for two teachers to provide 15 hours of student and parent training for a special education student.

The contracts specify the total to be paid and includes mileage, which was not estimated in this instance because the teachers involved have not set the schedule of lessons and may be receiving mileage from a location outside of their offices.

"I'm just not comfortable approving anything that has mileage but limit," Huber said. He added that he undertands the contract needs to be approved, and didn't have an issue with the contracts outside of the missing mileage cost limit.

"I'm just going to have to vote no on this," he said.

While the board kicked around several possible solutions to the problem, Huber's vote wasn't won until the resolution on the contracts was modified to include a provision that the district business office would review and set an estimate for the mileage.

Perhaps more significantly, Huber also received a vow from adminstrators that such information will routinely be included in similar contracts in the future.
