Bowing to Pressure, District to Upgrade Internet

New system will offer better connections for students, teachers

The need for Warren schools to update its computer network systems has been building for a while, but the pressure for a fix finally pushed the into action.

The board approved a plan to replace the current system with a high-speed wireless network at the June 11 meeting. Office Solutions, Inc., will install the system, which will include a tiered-access system allowing for controlled levels of access to the Internet, with costs not to exceed $85,000.

Although the board has been planning on the upgrade, pressure for action had been growing from some unlikely lobbyists, according to Superintendent Tami Crader.

"I am literally getting complaints from kids every day," Dr. Crader said. "They use it all the time, so they have an expectation."

When students return in the fall, they'll find a wireless system designed to function with any devices they bring from home, from e-readers to smart phones and tablet computers, and which they'll be able to use in class to access documents or files posted by teachers. Dr. Crader said the "Bring your own device" plans allowing students to use personal computers or phones is still in planning, but the system will enable the district to intitiate it later.

Teachers will be able to build lessons plans with technology, without having to reserve one of the schools' shared computer carts.

Dr. Crader said in addition to offering much faster connection speeds, the system will also offer more access points in the schools.

This article was edited to clarify the district's planning for students using their own devices, and the board's long-standing agreement to upgrade the system.
