Communications Expert to Speak on District's 21st Century Learning Program

Public can learn more about program from creator Lee Crockett.

A "21st Century Fluencies" presentation will be offered to the public at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Warren Middle School, featuring internationally-recognized speaker Lee Crockett discussing the basis for the district's 21st Century Learning initiative.

The evening presentation follows one scheduled earlier in the day for Warren Township teaching staff.

Crockett, of the 21st Century Fluency Project, will present his view on the need for innovation in schools. All community member, parents, teachers and students are invited to attend.

Today's students are much different from students of the past. They are expected to manage, manipulate, and evaluate vast amounts of information that is available to them through the Internet. In seconds, students can access and/or share information from anywhere in the world. This fact alone compels school leaders and teachers to evaluate the way classrooms are organized and instruction is delivered.

In commenting about this initiative, Dr. Tami Crader, Warren Township
superintendent of schools commented, "Because today's students know no other time when computers and the internet were not part of their lives, we describe them as 'digital natives' who are often surrounded by those of us who are 'digital immigrants.' It will be important for us to look ahead to what students need to know not only in today's learning environment, but in their continued academic career and in the work force."

According to Mr, Crockett, the keynote speaker, "students will need specific 21st century 'fluencies' that will enable them to collaborate, think critically, and communicate."

In an effort to match classrooms to students' needs, Warren Township Schools' teachers and administrators will begin to discuss these "fluencies" and to make the necessary adjustments to their instructional strategies and programs.

Understanding the need for balance in our increasingly digital lives, Lee has lived in Kyoto, Japan where he studied Aikido and Tea Ceremony as well as Florence, Italy, where he studied painting at the Accademia D'Arte," according to the bio.
