Dan Smith's Double Dose of Good News

Wrestling head coach honored after winning 200th victory.

wrestling head coach Dan Smith's Wednesday was the kind of a day we all hope for: a bit of good news in the morning, and a big accomplishment before the end of the day.

Smith was greeted in the morning with the news his team is ranked 14th in the state in the most recent polling—the highest the team has ever ranked, he noted.

"It's taken us a while to get here; it's taken us a bit of time to build the 'stable' up," he said, Wednesday night after his team added another victory in its 14-2 season—his 200th career win for Watchung Hills.

"Well, if you stick around long enough..." he said.

Perhaps, but it was enough of an achievement that WHRHS Principal Tom DiGanci noted it after the meet, and a banner with his accomplishment was unfurled in the gym.

A stream of well-wishers congratulated Smith after the meet, with parents, other coaches and school staff members queuing up to shake his hand.
