Diana Liao and Katherine Dong Tapped for Guv's School

Prestigious summer program accepts three from Watchung Hills Regional.

Three junior classmen were selected to take part in the 2012 Governor’s Schools, a unique and highly selective New Jersey summer learning program. They are: Diana Liao of Warren Township, selected for the Governor’s School of Engineering, and, for the Governor’s School in the Sciences, Katherine Dong of Warren Township and Jessica Xu, of Watchung.

Since enrollment in the prestigious summer program is even more limited than in former years due to New Jersey’s fiscal situation, the honor of being selected is even more distinguished than ever. After being nominated by officials in their own schools, nominees underwent further, more selective screening, submitted letters of recommendation, transcripts, personal essays, and  underwent interviews by directors of each specific school.

During their stay at Governor’s School, those selected will participate in a strenuous regime of advanced study, enrichment and academic challenge guided by acknowledged specialists in their various specialties. They may also take field trips and hear speakers relating to their studies, and perform experiments on an advanced level.

The Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology will be held at the Busch Campus of Rutgers University from July 1st to 27th. The school was initiated because of the state’s prominence in these areas. It introduces scholars to precepts of technology not ordinarily included in the secondary school curriculum.

The Governor’s School in the Sciences will be held at Drew University, Madison, from July 15th  to August 4th. The school exposes students to a range of scientific topics and allows them to meet scientists in various specialties. They are introduced to new concepts and theories, participate in hands-on research in their own area of interest and participate in team projects.

The Governor’s Schools have proved to be a good investment in the future, not only for the students who are  chosen to participate, but also for New Jersey’s growth as well.
