But four board members abstain on vote to use one of three 'snow days' in calendar.

With four members sitting on their hands, the approved a recommendation by Superintendent Frances Stromsland to close the school on Friday (May 25), Monday.

"You know how concerned I always am about weather," Dr. Stromsland said, suggesting the board consider using one of the three extra days in the school calendar. She added that "maybe, between May 30 and June 21, we won't have any emergencies."

But several members balked at the late change in the calendar, and members Gerry Binder, Christopher Collins, Lisa DiMizio and Laura Mandell abstained from voting on the change.

"I would prefer if we're ever in this situation again, we do this sooner to give the public and staff a little more notice," Board member Peter Fallon said.

Collins asked why a later date wasn't chosen to allow more notice, but Dr. Stromsland said June "gets into more difficulties."

"This is kind of a 'dead zone' on the calendar," she said.

Binder asked if the administration had checked that special education students would be able to receive transportation to others schools not closed Friday.
