Horowitz Files For Re-election To High School Board

There's time to file, but so far incumbent alone in seeking Warren seat up for election.

With seven days to go before the March 8 filing deadline, Robert Horowitz is the only candidate to file for the township's seat on the Watching Hills Regional High School Board of Education on the ballot this year.

Horowitz is finishing his second three-year stint on the board, which oversees the district's $25 million budget and the high school. The deadline to file is 4 p.m. March 8; information and forms for filing can be downloaded from the New Jersey School Boards Association.

Horowitz said when he first joined the school board, his goal was to ensure the school maintained high quality educational standards—a task he notes has become more difficult in recent years.

"I'm proud to say our spending has been wise and prudent," he said, noting that even as the budget has been reduced in real terms, students' perfomance in standardized tests, SAT scores and college admissions results have continued to improve. "We've done everything on our end to make sure our kids get a good education."

The board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. tonight to approve a preliminary budget to submit for county approval. Further budget discussions will be held in coming weeks, during which the budget may be changed before a public hearing that will be scheduled before March 29 sets the final budget.

Voters will decide the fate of the budget, and Horowitz' bid for re-election, on Wednesday, April 27.
