Middle School Students Rise to Two Challenges

Accept Rachel's Challenge after program at high school, and tackle fundraising for Valerie Fund.

Students at accomplished a lot last Friday, when the school participated in two special challenges for the students.

The day began with the entire student body and staff commuting to for a presentation of the anti-bullying Rachel's Challenge program.

The program is named after Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School. In her memory, a nationwide anti-bullying was launched aiming to foster positive attitudes and behaviors by students as a way to prevent incidents caused by long-term bullying.

While at the high school, the students participated in a program with a video presentation, followed by a 90-minute session with adult and student leaders offering ways to continue the movement towards "positive change."

When the students returned to WMS, they signed a large banner, pledging to remmeber the lessons of the "Rachel's Challenge" program. The banner is hanging in the school cafeteria as a daily reminder.

The students followed up the pledge with some action: the school's annual "Gives Back Walkathon."

"Our annual 'Gives Back Walkathon, is a TAP activity—Teacher Advisory Program—that combines fitness and community service in one school-wide event," teacher Bev MacGorman said. "The students select a charity each year and this year with pride we supported The Valerie Fund with the rest of the Warren community."

Last year, , and in 2010, the effort helped Habitat for Humanity.
MacGorman said the students also made cards for children currently being helped by the Valerie Fund.

At the end of the day, the school raised more than $11,000 for the fund effort.
