New Superintendent Calls First Day 'Fabulous'

Long day launches new superintendent's tenure.

The first day on a new job can be tough, and while new Watchung Hills Regional Superintendent Elizabeth Jewett said her first day Monday was "fabulous," it wasn't without some complications.

By the time of the special Board of Education meeting at about 7 p.m., Jewett was nearly speechless...or at least without a voice to say much.

"I don't know if it's the weather or what, but I sound much worse than I feel," she said with a voice that sounded as if she was battling a bad case of laryngitis. "I feel much better than I sound, though."

Jewett was welcomed to the school with a staff breakfast before getting to work. After a day of meeting staff members and settling into her new office, she sat in on the board's special meeting to advance the $12.5 million in repair and maintenance projects under consideration...but did not comment.

Jewett stepped into the post after she was appointed superintendent in May following a search by Hazard, Young and Associates' William Librera and Dwight Pfennig to find a replacement for Frances Stromsland.
