Township Committee: Teacher Talks Frustrate Parents

Frustrated with lack of progress, some are wondering if the municipal government can intercede.

members report hearing from parents frustrated over the lack of a settlement between the and the district's education association.

"The frequency of parents calling us is growing every day," Deputy Mayor Vic Sordillo said. "We're hearing from people in the street, wanting to know what we can do, which is pretty limited."

Other than add public pressure on negotiators, there isn't anything the committee members can do, and Sordillo said the committee may have some public discussions about the negotiations in upcoming meetings.

The district and the WTEA have been in talks since before the expiration of the last contract on June 20, 2010. A was called in to help try and find a solution to the stalemate, with representatives meeting in December and January.

Adding pressure to the negotiations was the announcement last week that the . The high school board and the WHREA had been in talks to strike an agreement to follow a contract that expired June 30, 2011.
