School Board Hopefuls Have to June 5 to File Petitions

Township board will have three seats up for election this year

If you want to be part of the team directing the future of Warren Township schools, consider running for a seat on the district's .

Three seats will be up for election this year— approved earlier this year—seats held by Sue Burman, current board President Gregory Przybylski, and .

Candidate kits for the Nov. 6, 2012, election for Board of Education members are now available. Candidates who wish to appear on the November ballot must file a petition by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5th at the Somerset County Clerk’s Office. Three seats, each for full three-year terms, will be available for the Warren Township Board of Education.

While candidates petitions are still available at the District Office at 213 Mt. Horeb Road, or on the warrentboe.org website, they may now only be returned to the County Clerk’s office.

The Somerset County Clerk’s Office is open from 8:15 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

To appear on the ballot, school board candidates must return their petitions with the signatures of any 10 voters registered in the district in which they are running. The petitions must be hand-delivered, but it is not necessary that the candidate him/herself be the deliverer.

Board candidates must be citizens who can read and write and have at least one year’s residency in the district. They must be registered to vote in the district before filing the nominating petition. Candidates can’t have a contract with or claim against the district, hold local elected municipal office or hold two elected positions. They are subject, within 30 days of election or appointment, to a criminal history background check.

The New Jersey School Boards Association has published an online Candidate Kit with information for citizens interested in running for a position on their local board of education in Warren.

Prospective school board candidates can obtain information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy and the role of the school board member at this site as well.
