Season Preview: Lady Warrior Basketball

New Faces Looking to Surprise Their Opponents

The NBA has settled its contract dispute and games are about to start and that means that basketball is about to start at Watchung Hills Regional High School. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Raiders girls’ basketball team.

OVERVIEW

With four of its starting five from last year gone to graduation there will be some new faces in the starting lineup when the Lady Warriors open their season against North Hunterdon Friday.

LAST SEASON'S RESULTS

The Warriors finished their 2011-2011 season with an 18-8 record which placed them third in the conference. The Lady Warriors were upset in the quarterfinals of the Somerset County tournament and lost to state sectional champion Edison in the State tournament.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON

Amy Park, senior forward/guard – A 4-year varsity player, the 5’10” Park will be used in every position depending on the game situation.

Monique Goncalves, senior guard The 5’2” Goncalves will be the starting point guard and expected to run the offense.

Kelsey Conway, sophomore, guard – Conway saw a lot of action last year as a freshman when she started a number of games for the Warriors.

Kara Smiegocki, sophomore forward – The 5’11” sophomore is expected to be an inside presence for the Lady Warriors as their starting big forward.

THEY WILL BE MISSED

Brielle Macellera, guard - Last year’s leading scorer, Macellera graduated of the Lady Warriors all time leading 3-point shooter and is now attending St. Joe’s.

Rosalie Minovich, guard – Was the heart and soul of last year’s team and is now attending Penn State.

Breanna Williams, forward – Williams is now at the University of Maryland.

Elana Trelman, forward – Trelman is now at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

COACHES TAKE
