Warren Middle School 'Album Art' at Warren Library Through January

Warren Township branch of the Somerset County Library again displaying work of Warren schools' students.

The Warren Middle School’s artwork display of album covers this week opened at the Warren Township branch of the Somerset County Library and will continue through the month of January, to be followed by an exhibit of the Woodland School's artists.

Last year, the Warren Library initially welcomed artwork displays from each of the five township schools.

With the help and support of the Children’s Librarian, Antonette D’Orazio, a rotating schedule allowed the teachers from each of the township's schools to showcase their students’ talents with unique and beautiful artwork: Donna Pellagrino (Angelo L. Tomaso School) Rebecca Davenport (Central School), Susan Sage (Mt. Horeb School) Jennifer Ronkiewicz (Woodland School) and Meryl Lettire (Warren Middle School).

The art displays began after Warren Township Schools Superintendent Tami Crader arrived in the district, with a goal of creating partnerships between the district schools and the Warren Township community. Part of that goal was recognized with the art displays at the library during the 2012-2013 school year, which continue through this year.

D’Orazio said there have been a host of positive comments already from parents visiting with their children, as well as from students who recognize their peers’ art pieces.

In the current showcase, eighth graders focused on album covers and studied the evolution of that commercial art form.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the rich history of this truly American phenomenon while discovering how basic package designs were transformed into high art. Students were able to explore various covers from different periods as well as different genres, to compare and contrast their styles and ultimately selected a musical group or artist of their choice. Additionally, they eagerly researched particular graphic designers and illustrators who collaborated and created the designs.

These middle school art students went on to discover how art on album covers reflects the ideals and vision of the musicians for whom they were created.

For this project, teacher Meryl.Lettire crafted lessons covering a variety of Common Core State Standards which included the creative process, history of arts and culture, performance, and critique methodologies.

For the final art pieces, students utilized computer technology in combination with either paints, pencils, markers, photographs, or other mediums. Upon completion, these young artists presented their work to their peers during a class critique, discussed their vision and final outcome, and gained valuable feedback and praise.

Members of the Warren Township Board of Education had the opportunity to view samples of the work. “I am so proud of our students' willingness to explore their own creativity and the creativity of others," Crader added.

The public is welcome to see more album covers from Warren Middle School’s eighth grade students by stopping by at the Warren Library. The viewers can appreciate the art, consider the diversity of the students' talent and consider the impact of the music as well.
