Watchung Hills Boys Basketball Ready to Play

Team has more experience, hoping it translates into more wins.

It’s high school hoops season, and the boys basketball team at Watchung Hills Regional High School is looking forward to a big year where it hopes to throw its name in the hat for a county and conference championship.

OVERVIEW
The Warriors have gotten a year older and more experienced, and head coach Justin Salton estimated before roster finalization that eight returning players would be included on the 2011-12 varsity roster. The Warriors have been working hard, competing in summer league games and making important strength and conditioning gains throughout the summer and fall in preparation for this season.

LAST SEASON'S RESULTS
A young team last year, the Warriors managed an 8-17 record in 2010-11, including a 70-53 loss in the first round of the NJSIAA Section II, Group IV playoffs to Columbia.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON

  • Steve Weidlich, Guard (Jr.)—The team’s leading scorer from a year ago, who averaged 14.8 points per game, returns looking to make a big statement in his junior year.
  • Clayton O’Brien, Forward (Sr.)—O’Brien came through with some big points for Watchung Hills in key situations last year, and will look to do so again.
  • Brandon Spiller, Forward (Sr.)—The Warriors’ resident big man looks to continue to provide help inside the paint for Watchung Hills.

  • Mike Lee, Point Guard—Lee was the only starter to graduate from the Warriors, which means someone will be looking to fill his shoes as Watchung Hills’ new point man.
